Grinch Cookies are soft, festive green Christmas cookies with a snowy powdered sugar crinkle coating and a signature red heart sprinkle. Their chewy centers and playful holiday appearance make them perfect for cookie exchanges, parties, and dessert trays.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Green gel food coloring, as needed
  • 3/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 24 red heart-shaped sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Whisk the flour, baking powder, and salt together in a medium bowl and set aside.
  3. Beat the softened butter and granulated sugar in a large mixing bowl until light and creamy.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then mix in the vanilla extract.
  5. Add green gel food coloring a little at a time until the dough reaches a vibrant green color.
  6. Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients just until a soft cookie dough forms.
  7. If the dough is too soft or sticky to roll, cover and refrigerate it for about 30 minutes.
  8. Combine the powdered sugar and cornstarch in a shallow bowl.
  9. Scoop the dough into approximately 1 1/2-tablespoon portions and roll each portion into a ball.
  10. Generously coat each dough ball in the powdered sugar mixture to create a thick white coating.
  11. Arrange the dough balls about 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets.
  12. Bake for 10–12 minutes, until the edges are set but the centers still look slightly soft.
  13. Immediately press one red heart-shaped sprinkle gently into the top of each warm cookie.
  14. Cool the cookies on the baking sheets for about 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Gel food coloring produces a vibrant green color without adding excessive liquid to the dough.
  • Chill particularly soft or sticky dough for about 30 minutes before shaping.
  • Coat the dough balls generously with powdered sugar to produce a pronounced crinkle effect.
  • Avoid overbaking the cookies if you want soft, slightly chewy centers.
  • For lemon cookies, add fresh lemon zest and a small amount of lemon extract.
  • White chocolate chips can be folded into the dough for an extra-sweet variation.
  • Store cooled cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4–5 days or freeze for up to 2–3 months.
