Ingredients

  • 2 bread slices
  • 2 slices cheddar cheese or preferred cheese

Instructions

  1. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  2. Butter one side of each bread slice evenly.
  3. Place one slice of bread butter-side down in the skillet.
  4. Add the cheese evenly over the bread.
  5. Top with the second slice of bread, butter-side facing up.
  6. Cook for 3–4 minutes until the bottom is golden brown and crispy.
  7. Carefully flip the sandwich and cook the other side until golden brown and the cheese is fully melted.
  8. Remove from the skillet and let cool slightly before slicing.
  9. Serve warm immediately.

Notes

  • Sourdough, brioche, or Texas toast make excellent bread choices.
  • Cook over medium-low heat for the crispiest bread and best cheese melt.
  • Cheddar, mozzarella, Swiss, provolone, and American cheese all melt well.
  • Mayonnaise can be used instead of butter for an extra crispy crust.
  • Add bacon, tomatoes, or caramelized onions for extra flavor.
  • Grilled cheese is best enjoyed fresh and hot.
  • Reheat leftovers in a skillet or toaster oven to maintain crispness.
