Green Detox Smoothie is a refreshing blend of spinach, pineapple, banana, green apple, ginger, and lemon. Naturally fruity and vibrant, it makes a quick breakfast or light snack in just a few minutes.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh spinach
  • 1 1/2 cups frozen pineapple chunks
  • 1 ripe banana
  • 1 green apple, cored and chopped
  • 1/2-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 1/2 cups cold water or coconut water
  • 1/2 cup ice cubes, optional
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds, optional

Instructions

  1. Wash the spinach and green apple thoroughly.
  2. Add the spinach and cold water or coconut water to a high-speed blender and blend briefly to break down the greens.
  3. Core and chop the green apple, then add it to the blender with the frozen pineapple and banana.
  4. Add the peeled fresh ginger, starting with a small amount for a balanced flavor.
  5. Pour in the fresh lemon juice.
  6. Add the optional chia seeds and ice cubes if desired. Ice may not be necessary when using plenty of frozen pineapple.
  7. Blend on high speed until completely smooth and creamy.
  8. Check the consistency and add more water or coconut water if the smoothie is too thick. Add more frozen pineapple or banana if it is too thin.
  9. Taste and adjust the lemon juice or ginger as desired.
  10. Pour into glasses and serve immediately while cold and fresh.

Notes

  • The word detox is used as a common name for this style of green smoothie and is not intended as a medical claim.
  • For a kale variation, replace some or all of the spinach with kale, remove the tough stems, and blend thoroughly with the liquid before adding the fruit.
  • For a tropical variation, add frozen mango and use coconut water as the liquid.
  • Add avocado for an especially creamy texture without a strong additional flavor.
  • Blueberries, strawberries, or raspberries can be added for a berry variation, although darker berries will change the green color.
  • For a more substantial breakfast, add chia seeds, ground flaxseed, rolled oats, or nut butter.
  • For a banana-free smoothie, substitute additional frozen pineapple, mango, or avocado.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours and shake or stir well before drinking.
  • For make-ahead smoothie packs, freeze portions of the spinach, pineapple, banana, apple, and ginger together, then blend with the liquid and lemon juice when ready to serve.
