Green Bean Casserole is a classic comfort food side dish featuring tender green beans in a creamy mushroom sauce topped with crispy fried onions. Perfect for holidays and family dinners, it delivers a delicious balance of creamy and crunchy textures.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lb fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 cups fried onions, divided
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, optional
  • Salt, to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
  3. Add the green beans and cook for 4–5 minutes until slightly tender.
  4. Drain the green beans and immediately transfer them to ice water to stop the cooking process. Drain again.
  5. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, black pepper, and garlic powder.
  6. Stir in the green beans and half of the fried onions.
  7. If using cheese, mix in half of the shredded cheddar cheese.
  8. Transfer the mixture to a greased casserole dish and spread evenly.
  9. Bake uncovered for 25 minutes.
  10. Remove the casserole from the oven and sprinkle the remaining fried onions and cheese over the top.
  11. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 5–10 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  12. Let the casserole rest for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Fresh green beans provide the best texture, but canned green beans can be used if desired.
  • Add cooked bacon, Parmesan cheese, or sliced almonds for extra flavor and texture.
  • For a homemade version, replace the canned soup with a scratch-made mushroom cream sauce.
  • Assemble the casserole up to one day ahead and refrigerate before baking.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
