French Onion Hamburger Steaks combine juicy seasoned beef patties with tender caramelized onions, savory beef gravy, and melted cheese. This comforting skillet dinner is especially delicious served with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, rice, or vegetables.

Ingredients

  • Ground beef
  • Breadcrumbs
  • Egg
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Olive oil
  • Yellow onions
  • Unsalted butter
  • Beef broth
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • All-purpose flour
  • Dried thyme
  • Garlic
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Provolone or Swiss cheese
  • Fresh parsley, optional

Instructions

  1. Place the ground beef in a large bowl and add the breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
  2. Gently mix until just combined, taking care not to overwork the beef.
  3. Divide the beef mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into a thick oval patty.
  4. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the hamburger steaks and brown them on both sides, then transfer them to a plate.
  5. Reduce the heat to medium and melt the butter in the same skillet. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, until very soft and golden.
  6. Add the minced garlic and dried thyme and cook briefly until fragrant.
  7. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir well. Cook for about 1 minute, then gradually pour in the beef broth while stirring.
  8. Add Worcestershire sauce and season the gravy with salt and black pepper. Simmer until the gravy begins to thicken.
  9. Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet and spoon some of the onions and gravy over each patty.
  10. Cover and simmer gently until the hamburger steaks are fully cooked and reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).
  11. Place a slice of provolone or Swiss cheese over each hamburger steak. Cover the skillet briefly until the cheese melts.
  12. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired and serve with plenty of French onion gravy spooned over the hamburger steaks.

Notes

  • Avoid overmixing the ground beef or pressing the patties too firmly to help keep the hamburger steaks tender.
  • Allow about 20 to 30 minutes for deeply softened, golden onions, cooking them over moderate to medium-low heat.
  • For a cheese-free version, omit the cheese and serve with plenty of caramelized onions and gravy.
  • For Mushroom French Onion Hamburger Steaks, cook sliced mushrooms with the onions until tender and lightly browned.
  • For extra cheese, use additional provolone or Swiss, or substitute Gruyère for a classic French onion flavor.
  • For stronger garlic flavor, add additional fresh garlic shortly before adding the flour and broth.
  • For a baked variation, brown the patties and prepare the gravy on the stovetop, transfer everything to an oven-safe dish, and bake until the patties reach 160°F (71°C). Add the cheese near the end.
  • Store leftovers with the gravy in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days.
  • When reheating, add a small splash of beef broth if the gravy has become too thick.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, rice, roasted potatoes, green beans, broccoli, or roasted vegetables.
