French Onion Chicken is a comforting dish featuring juicy chicken smothered in caramelized onions, savory broth, and melted cheese. Inspired by classic French onion soup, it’s rich, flavorful, and perfect for cozy meals.

Ingredients

  • Chicken breasts or thighs
  • Olive oil or butter
  • Onions, thinly sliced
  • Garlic, minced
  • Beef or chicken broth
  • Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • Thyme (fresh or dried)
  • Salt and pepper
  • Sliced cheese (such as Swiss or mozzarella)
  • Grated parmesan cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Season the chicken with salt and pepper.
  2. Heat olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat and sear the chicken until golden on both sides. Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same pan, cook the sliced onions over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until deeply caramelized, about 20–25 minutes.
  4. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  5. Pour in broth and Worcestershire sauce, then add thyme and simmer for a few minutes.
  6. Return the chicken to the pan and spoon the onion mixture over it.
  7. Top each piece with sliced cheese and parmesan if using.
  8. Cover and cook until the chicken is fully cooked and the cheese is melted, or broil briefly for a golden finish.
  9. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Use Gruyère cheese for a more traditional French onion flavor.
  • Add mushrooms for extra depth and texture.
  • A splash of white wine enhances the onion flavor.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat gently in a skillet or oven until warmed through.
