Easy Matcha Cruffins are flaky, buttery pastries made with puff pastry and infused with earthy matcha flavor. Crisp on the outside and tender inside, they’re perfect for breakfast, brunch, dessert, or an afternoon tea treat.

Ingredients

  • 2 puff pastry sheets, thawed
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 teaspoons matcha powder
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting
  • Sweetened whipped cream (optional filling)
  • Vanilla pastry cream (optional filling)
  • Matcha pastry cream (optional filling)
  • White chocolate spread (optional filling)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a standard 8-cup muffin pan.
  2. Mix the melted butter with the matcha powder until smooth. Stir in the vanilla extract if using.
  3. Lightly roll out each puff pastry sheet to slightly thin it.
  4. Brush the pastry evenly with the matcha butter mixture and sprinkle with the granulated sugar.
  5. Cut each pastry sheet into long strips and roll each strip into a tight spiral.
  6. Place each spiral upright into the prepared muffin cups.
  7. Bake for 22–25 minutes, or until puffed, golden brown, and crisp.
  8. Cool in the pan for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
  9. Dust generously with powdered sugar.
  10. If desired, pipe whipped cream, vanilla pastry cream, matcha pastry cream, or white chocolate spread into the center just before serving.

Notes

  • Keep the puff pastry cold while working to maintain flaky layers.
  • Fill the cruffins just before serving for the best texture.
  • Add white chocolate chips or black sesame seeds between the layers for extra flavor.
  • Store unfilled cruffins at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate filled cruffins for up to 4 days.
  • Freeze unfilled baked cruffins for up to 2 months and reheat in a 325°F (160°C) oven for 5–8 minutes.
