This Easy Cardamom Syrup is a fragrant homemade simple syrup infused with warm cardamom for a cozy, aromatic flavor. It’s perfect for sweetening coffee, tea, cocktails, mocktails, pancakes, and desserts.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1012 whole green cardamom pods, lightly crushed
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon orange zest (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine the water, sugar, and lightly crushed cardamom pods in a small saucepan.
  2. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring until the sugar completely dissolves.
  3. Reduce the heat and simmer gently for about 10 minutes to infuse the syrup with cardamom flavor.
  4. Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the syrup steep for 10 to 15 minutes.
  5. Stir in the vanilla extract or orange zest, if using.
  6. Strain the syrup through a fine-mesh sieve into a clean jar or bottle, discarding the cardamom pods.
  7. Allow the syrup to cool completely before sealing and refrigerating.

Notes

  • Add a cinnamon stick, cloves, or fresh ginger while simmering for additional flavor.
  • Use brown sugar instead of white sugar for a richer caramel-like syrup.
  • Stir in a little rose water after cooling for a floral variation.
  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.
  • If the syrup thickens after chilling, let it sit at room temperature or warm gently before using.
  • Use a clean spoon each time to help keep the syrup fresh.
