Easy Caramel Sauce with Milk is a smooth, rich, buttery sauce made with simple pantry ingredients. It’s a quick homemade topping that’s perfect for drizzling over desserts, breakfast treats, and fresh fruit.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 6 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Heat the granulated sugar in a heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat, stirring occasionally until it melts into a smooth amber-colored caramel.
  2. Carefully add the butter and stir until completely melted and incorporated.
  3. Slowly pour in the milk while stirring continuously, taking care as the mixture will bubble.
  4. Continue cooking and stirring until the sauce is smooth and fully combined.
  5. Stir in the vanilla extract and salt.
  6. Simmer for 2 to 3 minutes, or until the sauce reaches your desired consistency.
  7. Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the caramel to cool slightly.
  8. Transfer the caramel sauce to a clean glass jar or airtight container.
  9. Use warm or cool completely before storing in the refrigerator.

Notes

  • Add a pinch of flaky sea salt for salted caramel sauce.
  • Replace part of the granulated sugar with brown sugar for a deeper flavor.
  • Stir in a pinch of cinnamon or espresso powder for extra richness.
  • Use plant-based butter and oat or coconut milk for a dairy-free version.
  • Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
  • Reheat gently in the microwave or on the stovetop, adding a splash of milk if needed to thin the sauce.
  • The sauce will thicken as it cools and chills.
