A creamy, elegant butter board topped with flaky salt, fresh herbs, honey, lemon zest, and savory seasonings. Serve it with crusty bread and crackers for an easy, customizable appetizer.

Ingredients

  • Unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • Flaky sea salt
  • Fresh herbs, such as parsley, chives, thyme, or rosemary, chopped
  • Honey
  • Fresh lemon zest
  • Red pepper flakes
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • Roasted garlic, optional
  • Food-safe edible flowers, optional
  • Crusty bread, such as baguette or artisan bread, sliced
  • Sturdy crackers

Instructions

  1. Let the butter soften at room temperature for about 30–60 minutes, until easily spreadable but not melted.
  2. Choose a clean serving board or platter. Use a serving plate or line the surface with parchment paper if you prefer not to spread butter directly onto a wooden board.
  3. Spoon the softened butter onto the serving surface in several portions.
  4. Use the back of a spoon or a small offset spatula to spread the butter, creating decorative swirls and ridges.
  5. Sprinkle the butter evenly with flaky sea salt and freshly ground black pepper.
  6. Distribute the chopped fresh herbs over the butter.
  7. Scatter the lemon zest and red pepper flakes over the surface.
  8. If using roasted garlic, distribute small pieces over the butter or gently swirl some into it.
  9. Lightly drizzle honey over the butter for a sweet contrast.
  10. Finish with additional fresh herbs or food-safe edible flowers if desired.
  11. Arrange sliced crusty bread and crackers around the butter or serve them in a separate basket.
  12. Serve soon after assembling while the butter is soft and spreadable.

Notes

  • For a garlic herb version, use roasted garlic, rosemary, thyme, parsley, flaky salt, and black pepper.
  • For a sweet butter board, add honey or maple syrup, cinnamon, chopped pecans, dried fruit, and flaky salt. Serve with brioche, croissants, or fruit.
  • For a sweet-and-spicy variation, drizzle with hot honey and sprinkle with crushed red pepper flakes.
  • For a Mediterranean-inspired version, add sun-dried tomatoes, olives, fresh herbs, lemon zest, and black pepper.
  • Individual butter plates can be prepared instead of one shared board for separate portions.
  • If using salted butter, reduce or omit the flaky salt according to taste.
  • The board can be assembled slightly ahead and refrigerated covered. Let the butter soften briefly before serving and add delicate garnishes closer to serving time.
  • Transfer properly handled leftover butter to an airtight container and refrigerate. Store bread and crackers separately at room temperature to keep them crisp.
