Homemade Disneyland-inspired corn dogs featuring juicy hot dogs coated in a thick, slightly sweet cornmeal batter and fried until crisp and golden. Serve them warm with ketchup, mustard, or your favorite dipping sauce for a fun meal or party snack.

Ingredients

  • 8 hot dogs
  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup milk or buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • Vegetable or canola oil, for frying
  • 8 wooden corn dog sticks
  • Ketchup, for serving
  • Yellow mustard, for serving

Instructions

  1. Pat the hot dogs completely dry with paper towels so the batter adheres properly.
  2. Carefully insert a wooden stick into one end of each hot dog, pushing it far enough to hold securely without piercing through the opposite end.
  3. Heat several inches of vegetable or canola oil in a deep, heavy-bottomed pot to 350°F (175°C).
  4. Whisk the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and black pepper together in a large bowl.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg, milk or buttermilk, and honey until combined.
  6. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir just until a thick, smooth batter forms. Avoid overmixing.
  7. Transfer the batter to a tall glass or narrow container deep enough to coat the hot dogs.
  8. Dip one hot dog at a time into the batter until completely covered. Slowly lift it out and allow a little excess batter to drip away.
  9. Carefully lower the battered hot dog into the hot oil. Fry only a few corn dogs at a time to maintain the oil temperature.
  10. Fry for 3–5 minutes, turning as needed, until the coating is puffed, crisp, and evenly golden brown.
  11. Carefully remove the corn dogs from the oil and transfer them to a wire rack or paper-towel-lined plate to drain.
  12. Let cool briefly and serve warm with ketchup, yellow mustard, or another favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • For mini corn dogs, cut the hot dogs into smaller pieces before coating and frying.
  • If the batter has trouble sticking, make sure the hot dogs are completely dry and lightly dust them with flour before dipping.
  • For a cheesy variation, alternate pieces of hot dog and firm cheese on the sticks and make sure the cheese is completely covered with batter before frying.
  • Add smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, or cayenne pepper to the batter for extra seasoning.
  • Beef, chicken, or turkey hot dogs can be used as long as they are fully cooked and fit securely on the sticks.
  • Add extra honey for a sweeter coating, or slightly reduce the sugar and honey for a more savory corn dog.
  • Maintain the frying oil near 350°F (175°C) and avoid overcrowding the pot for an evenly crisp coating.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3–4 days. Reheat in an oven or air fryer for the best texture.
  • Cooked corn dogs can also be frozen and reheated directly from frozen in an oven or air fryer until thoroughly heated.
