Deep-Fried Oreos are a classic fair-style dessert with a fluffy golden coating wrapped around warm, softened chocolate sandwich cookies. A generous dusting of powdered sugar makes these quick fried treats especially indulgent.

Ingredients

  • 12 Oreo cookies
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 3/4 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • Vegetable or canola oil, for frying
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar, for serving

Instructions

  1. Add several inches of vegetable or canola oil to a deep, heavy-bottomed pot and heat it to 350°F (175°C).
  2. While the oil heats, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, whole milk, vanilla extract, and melted butter.
  4. Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients and stir just until a smooth, thick batter forms. Avoid overmixing.
  5. Dip one Oreo at a time into the batter, completely coating the cookie. Allow a little excess batter to drip back into the bowl.
  6. Using tongs or a slotted spoon, carefully lower the coated Oreo into the hot oil. Fry only a few cookies at a time to maintain the oil temperature.
  7. Fry for about 1–2 minutes per side, turning as needed, until the coating is puffed and golden brown.
  8. Carefully remove the fried Oreos from the oil and transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate or wire rack to drain.
  9. Dust the Oreos generously with powdered sugar while they are still warm.
  10. Allow them to cool just enough to eat comfortably, then serve warm for the crispiest texture.

Notes

  • Keep the frying oil close to 350°F (175°C) for a crisp coating that does not absorb excessive oil.
  • Double Stuf Oreos can be substituted for regular Oreos for a richer, creamier center.
  • If the batter is too thin to cling to the cookies, stir in a small amount of additional flour.
  • For extra chocolate flavor, add a little cocoa powder to the batter or drizzle the finished Oreos with melted chocolate.
  • For a cinnamon-sugar variation, coat the warm fried Oreos in cinnamon and granulated sugar instead of powdered sugar.
  • Golden Oreos, mint Oreos, peanut butter Oreos, and other sandwich cookie varieties can be prepared using the same method.
  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce, or caramel sauce for an extra-decadent dessert.
  • Deep-Fried Oreos are best served immediately while the exterior is warm and crisp.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
  • Reheat leftovers in a 350°F (175°C) oven or air fryer for a few minutes to restore some crispness.
