Ingredients

  • 2 lbs Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp butter, plus extra for greasing
  • 1 cup Gruyere or parmesan cheese, grated
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme (optional)
  • 1/2 cup sliced onions (optional)
  • 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese (optional)
  • 1 tsp fresh rosemary (optional)
  • 1/4 cup crispy bacon pieces (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and butter a baking dish.
  2. Peel the potatoes and slice them thinly using a knife or mandoline.
  3. In a saucepan, heat the cream, milk, garlic, salt, black pepper, and nutmeg until warm but not boiling.
  4. Arrange a layer of potatoes in the prepared baking dish.
  5. Pour a small amount of the cream mixture over the potatoes.
  6. Sprinkle with a little cheese if using.
  7. Repeat the layers until all potatoes and cream mixture are used.
  8. Finish with the remaining cheese on top for a golden crust.
  9. Cover loosely with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  10. Remove the foil and continue baking for 20 to 30 minutes until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
  11. Let the dish rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes work best for a creamy texture.
  • Use Gruyere cheese for a traditional French flavor.
  • Add caramelized onions or crispy bacon for extra richness.
  • Slice the potatoes very thinly for even cooking.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Reheat covered in the oven at 350°F until warmed through.
  • This dish can be frozen for up to 2 months, though the texture may soften slightly.
