Crispy Tostones are golden twice-fried green plantains that are crunchy on the outside and tender inside. This classic Latin American dish makes a flavorful snack, appetizer, or side dish perfect for dipping and sharing.

Ingredients

  • 2 green plantains
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • Fresh lime wedges for serving

Instructions

  1. Peel the green plantains by cutting off both ends and slicing the skin lengthwise.
  2. Cut the plantains into thick slices about 1 inch wide.
  3. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  4. Fry the plantain slices for 3–4 minutes per side until lightly golden but not browned.
  5. Remove the plantains and place them on a paper towel-lined plate.
  6. Using a tostonera or the bottom of a glass, flatten each slice to about 1/4-inch thickness.
  7. Return the flattened plantains to the hot oil and fry again for 2–3 minutes per side until crispy and golden brown.
  8. Transfer to paper towels to drain excess oil.
  9. Sprinkle immediately with salt and optional garlic powder.
  10. Serve hot with lime wedges or your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Add chili powder or paprika for extra spice.
  • Serve with garlic aioli, guacamole, salsa, or spicy mayo.
  • Coconut oil can be used for a slightly sweeter flavor.
  • Top with shredded cheese, beans, avocado, or fresh herbs for loaded tostones.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
  • Reheat in the oven or air fryer to restore crispiness.
