Crispy Tostones are golden twice-fried green plantains that are crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside. Popular in Latin American and Caribbean cuisine, these savory bites make a delicious snack, appetizer, or side dish.

Ingredients

  • 2 green plantains
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Lime wedges
  • Fresh parsley or cilantro for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cut the ends off the plantains and score the peel lengthwise.
  2. Remove the peel and slice the plantains into thick rounds about 1 inch thick.
  3. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  4. Fry the plantain slices for 3–4 minutes per side until lightly golden.
  5. Remove the plantains and place them on a paper towel-lined plate.
  6. Using a tostonera or the bottom of a glass, flatten each slice carefully.
  7. Return the flattened plantains to the hot oil.
  8. Fry again for 2–3 minutes per side until crispy and deeply golden brown.
  9. Transfer to paper towels and season immediately with salt and garlic powder.
  10. Serve hot with lime wedges and your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Add cayenne pepper or chili powder for spicy tostones.
  • Serve with garlic aioli, mojo sauce, guacamole, or salsa.
  • Coconut oil adds a subtle tropical flavor.
  • Loaded tostones can be topped with cheese, avocado, or shredded meat.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
  • Reheat in the oven or air fryer to restore crispiness.
