Crispy Frizzled Onions from Scratch are thinly sliced onions fried until perfectly golden, crunchy, and flavorful. These homemade crispy onions are an irresistible topping for burgers, casseroles, salads, soups, and sandwiches, delivering better flavor and texture than store-bought versions.

Ingredients

  • 2 large yellow onions
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1 cup buttermilk or milk
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Peel the onions and slice them very thinly into rings or strips.
  2. Place the sliced onions in a bowl and cover with buttermilk or milk. Let soak for 10–15 minutes.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet or heavy-bottomed pot to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Remove the onions from the milk mixture and allow excess liquid to drip off.
  6. Toss the onions in the flour mixture until fully coated.
  7. Fry the onions in batches, avoiding overcrowding, for 2–4 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
  8. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel-lined plate.
  9. Sprinkle lightly with extra salt while still warm.
  10. Allow the onions to cool slightly as they continue crisping.

Notes

  • Sweet onions can be used for a milder flavor.
  • Cornstarch helps create an extra crispy coating.
  • Add cayenne pepper or Cajun seasoning for a spicy variation.
  • Do not overcrowd the pan while frying to maintain crispness.
  • Store cooled onions in an airtight container and reheat in the oven to restore crunch.
  • These crispy onions are perfect for burgers, casseroles, salads, soups, and sandwiches.
