Golden, crispy fries with a crunchy exterior and fluffy interior, perfectly seasoned for a classic and irresistible side dish. Easy to make at home with simple ingredients and techniques.

Ingredients

  • 4 large russet potatoes
  • 4 cups water (for soaking)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 cups oil (for frying or 2 tbsp for baking)
  • 1/2 tsp paprika (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper (optional)

Instructions

  1. Peel potatoes if desired and cut into even strips.
  2. Soak cut potatoes in cold water for at least 30 minutes to remove excess starch.
  3. Drain and pat completely dry with a towel.
  4. If frying, heat oil to 325°F (160°C) and fry potatoes in batches for 4–5 minutes until softened. Remove and rest.
  5. Increase oil temperature to 375°F (190°C) and fry again until golden brown and crispy.
  6. If baking, toss dried potatoes with oil and spread on a baking sheet. Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 30–40 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  7. Season immediately with salt and optional spices.
  8. Serve hot.

Notes

  • Russet potatoes are best for a crispy texture.
  • Ensure potatoes are fully dry before cooking to avoid sogginess.
  • Double frying gives the crispiest results.
  • Air frying is a lighter alternative with less oil.
  • Serve immediately for best texture.
  • Reheat in an oven or air fryer to maintain crispiness.
