Crispy Air Fryer Chicken Parmesan is a lighter version of the classic Italian favorite with juicy breaded chicken, rich marinara sauce, and melted mozzarella cheese. Cooked in the air fryer for a crispy texture with less oil, this comforting dinner is perfect for busy weeknights.

Ingredients

  • 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup marinara sauce
  • Olive oil spray
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley (optional)

Instructions

  1. Slice or pound the chicken breasts to an even thickness.
  2. Prepare three shallow bowls with flour, beaten eggs, and a breadcrumb mixture combined with Parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
  3. Coat each chicken piece in flour, then egg, and finally the breadcrumb mixture.
  4. Lightly spray the breaded chicken with olive oil spray.
  5. Preheat the air fryer to 380°F if needed.
  6. Place the chicken in the air fryer basket in a single layer.
  7. Air fry for 16 to 18 minutes, flipping halfway through cooking, until crispy and the chicken reaches 165°F internally.
  8. Spoon marinara sauce over each piece of chicken.
  9. Top with mozzarella cheese and additional Parmesan cheese if desired.
  10. Return the chicken to the air fryer for 2 to 3 minutes until the cheese is melted.
  11. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve warm.

Notes

  • Panko breadcrumbs provide extra crispiness.
  • Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket for even cooking.
  • Chicken tenders can be used for smaller portions.
  • Use gluten-free breadcrumbs and flour for a gluten-free version.
  • Serve with spaghetti, zucchini noodles, salad, or garlic bread.
  • Reheat leftovers in the air fryer to maintain a crispy coating.
