Churros are crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and coated in a sweet cinnamon-sugar mixture. These classic fried pastries are perfect for dessert, snacks, or celebrations and pair wonderfully with chocolate dipping sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup chocolate sauce or melted chocolate (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the water, sugar, salt, and butter.
  2. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat.
  3. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the flour until a smooth dough forms.
  4. Allow the dough to cool for about 5 minutes.
  5. Mix in the egg and vanilla extract until the dough becomes smooth and glossy.
  6. Transfer the dough to a piping bag fitted with a large star tip.
  7. Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep pot to 375°F (190°C).
  8. Pipe strips of dough directly into the hot oil, cutting them to the desired length.
  9. Fry the churros for 2 to 3 minutes per side until golden brown.
  10. Transfer the churros to a paper towel-lined plate to drain briefly.
  11. Combine the sugar and cinnamon in a shallow bowl.
  12. While still warm, roll the churros in the cinnamon-sugar mixture until fully coated.
  13. Serve immediately with chocolate sauce if desired.
