Chocolate Pie is a rich and creamy dessert featuring a flaky or cookie crust filled with silky chocolate custard and topped with fluffy whipped cream. This classic pie is perfect for holidays, celebrations, and satisfying any chocolate craving.

Ingredients

  • Baked 9-inch pie crust or chocolate cookie crust
  • Granulated sugar
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • Cornstarch
  • Salt
  • Whole milk
  • Egg yolks
  • Semi-sweet chocolate, chopped
  • Unsalted butter
  • Vanilla extract
  • Heavy whipping cream
  • Powdered sugar
  • Vanilla extract (for topping)
  • Chocolate shavings (optional garnish)
  • Chocolate curls (optional garnish)
  • Cocoa powder (optional garnish)
  • Fresh berries (optional garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven if baking a homemade pie crust according to your crust recipe.
  2. In a medium saucepan, whisk together the sugar, cocoa powder, cornstarch, and salt.
  3. Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth.
  4. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture begins to thicken.
  5. In a separate bowl, lightly beat the egg yolks.
  6. Slowly whisk a small amount of the hot chocolate mixture into the egg yolks to temper them.
  7. Pour the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan.
  8. Continue cooking for several minutes, stirring constantly, until the filling becomes thick and smooth.
  9. Remove the saucepan from the heat.
  10. Add the chopped chocolate, butter, and vanilla extract, stirring until completely melted and smooth.
  11. Pour the filling into the prepared pie crust.
  12. Press plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the filling to prevent a skin from forming.
  13. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours or until fully set.
  14. For the topping, beat the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
  15. Spread or pipe the whipped cream over the chilled pie.
  16. Garnish with chocolate shavings, chocolate curls, cocoa powder, or fresh berries if desired.
  17. Slice and serve chilled.
