Creamy make-ahead overnight oats combining rich chocolate with bright, fresh orange flavor. Cacao, orange zest, Greek yogurt, and chia seeds create a thick and satisfying breakfast that is ready straight from the refrigerator.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 cup milk of choice
  • 1/2 cup plain or vanilla Greek yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cacao or cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup or honey
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • 1 teaspoon finely grated orange zest
  • 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon, optional
  • Fresh orange segments, for topping
  • Cacao nibs, for topping
  • Chopped almonds or hazelnuts, for topping
  • Dark chocolate shavings, for topping
  • Extra orange zest, for topping
  • Greek yogurt, optional for topping

Instructions

  1. Add the rolled oats, cacao or cocoa powder, chia seeds, salt, and optional cinnamon to a bowl or jar. Stir until the dry ingredients are evenly combined.
  2. Add the milk, Greek yogurt, maple syrup or honey, fresh orange juice, orange zest, and vanilla extract.
  3. Stir thoroughly until smooth and no dry pockets of cacao remain.
  4. Cover the container and refrigerate for at least 6 hours or overnight, allowing the oats and chia seeds to absorb the liquid and thicken.
  5. Stir the oats thoroughly before serving. If they are too thick, add a splash of milk until the desired consistency is reached.
  6. Taste and add extra orange zest or a small drizzle of maple syrup or honey if desired.
  7. Divide between two bowls or jars and top with fresh orange segments, cacao nibs, chopped almonds or hazelnuts, dark chocolate shavings, extra orange zest, or Greek yogurt as desired.

Notes

  • For stronger orange flavor, add extra finely grated orange zest rather than excessive orange juice, which can make the oats too thin.
  • For an extra-chocolate version, mix in dark chocolate chips or cacao nibs.
  • For a dairy-free version, use plant-based milk and coconut or another plant-based yogurt.
  • For a chocolate orange hazelnut variation, stir in hazelnut butter and top with toasted chopped hazelnuts.
  • For extra creaminess, replace part of the milk with full-fat coconut milk or add almond or cashew butter.
  • Fresh raspberries or sliced banana make flavorful fruit additions.
  • Store covered in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days and keep crunchy toppings separate until serving.
  • These oats can be served cold or gently reheated with a splash of additional milk. Add fresh orange segments after reheating.
