Chocolate Monster Cookies are thick, chewy chocolate cookies loaded with creamy peanut butter, hearty oats, chocolate chips, and colorful candy-coated chocolates. They are a rich, fun treat for parties, holidays, bake sales, or everyday dessert cravings.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup candy-coated chocolate pieces

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line large baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Whisk the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt together in a medium bowl and set aside.
  3. Beat the softened butter, peanut butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar together until creamy and well combined.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients and mix just until a thick chocolate dough forms.
  6. Stir in the rolled oats until evenly distributed.
  7. Fold in the chocolate chips and candy-coated chocolate pieces, reserving a small handful of each for topping.
  8. Scoop the dough into generous portions, gently roll into balls, and arrange about 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets.
  9. Press a few reserved chocolate chips and candy pieces into the top of each dough ball.
  10. Bake for 10–12 minutes, until the edges are set but the centers remain slightly soft.
  11. Let the cookies rest on the baking sheets for 5–10 minutes so they can finish setting.
  12. Transfer the cookies to a wire rack and cool completely before storing or serving.

Notes

  • Use softened rather than melted butter to help prevent excessive spreading.
  • If the dough feels warm or sticky, refrigerate it for 20–30 minutes before baking.
  • Old-fashioned rolled oats provide the chewiest, heartiest texture.
  • For extra texture, add chopped peanuts, pecans, walnuts, or crushed pretzels.
  • Store cooled cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4–5 days.
  • Freeze baked cookies or portioned unbaked dough for up to 2–3 months.
