Soft and fluffy chocolate hot cross buns filled with rich chocolate chips and warm spices, finished with a classic cross and glossy glaze.

Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour
  • Warm milk
  • Sugar
  • Active dry yeast
  • Butter, softened
  • Egg
  • Cocoa powder
  • Salt
  • Ground cinnamon or mixed spice
  • Chocolate chips or chopped chocolate
  • Flour and water (for the cross)
  • Honey or sugar syrup (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add flour, cocoa powder, softened butter, egg, salt, and spices, then mix to form a soft dough.
  3. Knead the dough until smooth and elastic, then fold in the chocolate chips.
  4. Cover and let rise for 1 to 1.5 hours until doubled in size.
  5. Divide the dough into equal portions and shape into balls. Place them on a baking tray.
  6. Cover and let rise again for 30–45 minutes.
  7. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  8. Mix flour and water into a paste and pipe crosses over each bun.
  9. Bake for 20–25 minutes until cooked through.
  10. Brush with honey or sugar syrup while warm for a glossy finish.
  11. Serve warm or at room temperature.
