Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 beef hot dogs
  • 8 hot dog buns
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup diced white onion
  • Yellow mustard, for serving
  • Sliced jalapeños (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it into fine crumbles.
  2. Add the diced yellow onion and cook for about 5 minutes until softened.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
  4. Add the tomato sauce, tomato paste, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Stir well to combine.
  5. Simmer the chili for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
  6. Meanwhile, grill, boil, pan-fry, or air fry the hot dogs until heated through.
  7. Warm or lightly toast the hot dog buns if desired.
  8. Place one hot dog into each bun.
  9. Spoon a generous amount of chili over each hot dog.
  10. Top with shredded cheddar cheese, diced white onion, mustard, and sliced jalapeños if desired.
  11. Serve immediately while hot.

Notes

  • Prepare the chili up to 3 days in advance and reheat before serving.
  • Toast the buns to help prevent them from becoming soggy.
  • Add crispy bacon, coleslaw, or crushed corn chips for extra flavor and texture.
  • Use turkey or chicken hot dogs for a lighter variation.
  • Freeze leftover chili in an airtight container for up to 3 months.
  • Adjust the heat level by adding cayenne pepper, chipotle peppers, or hot sauce to the chili.
  • Serve with fries, onion rings, potato salad, or baked beans for a complete meal.
