Juicy homemade cheeseburgers topped with melted cheese and sweet, sticky Coca-Cola onions. The savory beef and glossy caramelized onions make these flavorful burgers perfect for cookouts, game days, or casual dinners.

Ingredients

  • Ground beef
  • Yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • Regular Coca-Cola
  • Butter
  • Olive oil
  • Brown sugar, optional
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Cheddar or American cheese slices
  • Burger buns
  • Salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • Lettuce, optional
  • Tomato slices, optional
  • Pickles, optional
  • Mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, or burger sauce, optional

Instructions

  1. Heat the butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the sliced onions and cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they begin to soften.
  3. Pour in the Coca-Cola and add the Worcestershire sauce. Stir in brown sugar if you prefer sweeter, stickier onions.
  4. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer the onions for 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the liquid has reduced and the onions are soft, dark, and sticky.
  5. When very little liquid remains and the onions are coated in a thick, glossy glaze, remove them from the heat and set aside.
  6. Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions and gently shape each portion into a patty slightly wider than the burger buns.
  7. Season both sides of the patties generously with salt and black pepper just before cooking.
  8. Heat a grill, grill pan, or heavy skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties to your preferred doneness while ensuring they reach a food-safe internal temperature.
  9. During the final minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese over each patty and allow it to melt.
  10. Lightly toast the burger buns on the grill or in the skillet until the cut sides are golden.
  11. Spread the desired sauce over the buns and add lettuce, tomato, and pickles if using.
  12. Place a cheeseburger patty on each bottom bun and spoon a generous portion of Coca-Cola onions over the melted cheese.
  13. Add the top buns and serve immediately while the burgers are hot and the cheese is melted.

Notes

  • Regular Coca-Cola works best because its sugar helps produce the thick, sticky glaze. Diet Coke and Coke Zero may not reduce to the same consistency.
  • Add smoked paprika or barbecue sauce to the onions for a smoky variation.
  • For extra heat, add sliced jalapeños, cayenne pepper, hot sauce, or Pepper Jack cheese.
  • Cheddar, American, smoked Gouda, Swiss, Monterey Jack, and Pepper Jack are all good cheese options.
  • Sautéed mushrooms can be added for extra savory flavor.
  • Make sliders by forming smaller patties and serving them on slider buns.
  • The Coca-Cola onions can be prepared up to 3–4 days ahead and refrigerated in an airtight container. Reheat gently with a small splash of water or Coca-Cola if the glaze becomes too thick.
  • Store cooked patties and onions separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days. Keep buns and fresh toppings separate until serving.
