This make-ahead treat is a delicious twist on classic tiramisu, perfect for entertaining or special occasions.

Ingredients

  • 2 ripe bananas, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, divided
  • 8 ounces mascarpone cheese
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 18 ladyfinger cookies
  • 1 cup brewed espresso, cooled
  • 2 tablespoons coffee liqueur (optional)
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder, for dusting
  • Dark chocolate shavings or grated chocolate, for garnish
  • Banana slices, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Stir in the brown sugar until dissolved, then add the banana slices, cinnamon, and half of the vanilla extract. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes until lightly caramelized. Let cool completely.
  3. Beat the heavy whipping cream until soft peaks form.
  4. Fold the mascarpone cheese, powdered sugar, and remaining vanilla extract into the whipped cream until smooth and fluffy.
  5. Combine the cooled espresso with the coffee liqueur if using.
  6. Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the espresso mixture without oversoaking.
  7. Layer espresso-soaked ladyfingers, mascarpone filling, and caramelized bananas into individual dessert cups.
  8. Repeat the layers until the cups are filled, finishing with the mascarpone mixture.
  9. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.
  10. Before serving, dust with cocoa powder and garnish with chocolate shavings and fresh banana slices if desired.

Notes

  • Drizzle caramel sauce between the layers for extra sweetness.
  • Substitute crushed chocolate cookies for the ladyfingers for a different texture.
  • Add toasted pecans or walnuts for a crunchy contrast.
  • Use decaffeinated espresso for a caffeine-free version.
  • Sprinkle a pinch of sea salt over the caramelized bananas for a sweet-and-salty finish.
  • Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze without garnishes for up to 1 month.
  • Add the cocoa powder, chocolate shavings, and fresh banana garnish just before serving for the best presentation.
