Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground chicken
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons Cajun seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup chicken broth
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 4 to 6 hamburger buns
  • Sliced green onions or chopped parsley, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Cook the diced onion and green bell pepper for about 5 minutes until softened.
  3. Stir in the garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Add the ground chicken and cook until browned, breaking it into small crumbles as it cooks.
  5. Stir in the Cajun seasoning and tomato paste, cooking for 1 minute.
  6. Add the tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and chicken broth.
  7. Simmer for 8 to 10 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  8. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
  9. Spoon the Cajun chicken mixture onto toasted hamburger buns.
  10. Garnish with sliced green onions or chopped parsley if desired and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Substitute ground turkey for ground chicken if preferred.
  • Add diced celery, sautéed mushrooms, or sliced jalapeños for extra flavor and texture.
  • Top with pepper jack cheese, coleslaw, avocado, or crispy fried onions.
  • Add a splash of hot sauce for extra heat.
  • Serve the filling over rice instead of buns for a hearty variation.
  • Store leftover filling in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Freeze the filling for up to 3 months and thaw overnight before reheating.
  • Reheat gently with a splash of chicken broth if the sauce becomes too thick.
