Broiled Black Cod is an elegant seafood dish featuring rich, buttery sablefish marinated in a savory-sweet blend of soy sauce, mirin, ginger, and garlic. Broiled until caramelized and flaky, this restaurant-quality recipe is both simple and impressive.

Ingredients

  • 4 black cod fillets (about 6 ounces each)
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp mirin
  • 1 tbsp sake (optional)
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • Sesame seeds, for garnish
  • Lemon wedges, for serving

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, mirin, sake, brown sugar, sesame oil, ginger, and garlic.
  2. Place the black cod fillets in a shallow dish or resealable bag.
  3. Pour the marinade over the fish and refrigerate for 30 minutes to 2 hours.
  4. Preheat the broiler and position an oven rack about 6 inches from the heat source.
  5. Line a baking sheet with foil and lightly grease it.
  6. Remove the fish from the marinade and place it skin-side down on the prepared baking sheet.
  7. Broil for 8 to 10 minutes, depending on thickness, until the fish is caramelized on top and flakes easily with a fork.
  8. Watch carefully during the final minutes to prevent burning.
  9. Remove from the oven and let rest for 2 minutes.
  10. Garnish with sliced green onions, sesame seeds, and lemon wedges before serving.

Notes

  • Add white miso paste to the marinade for a classic miso black cod variation.
  • Use reduced-sodium soy sauce for a lower-sodium option.
  • Orange juice, yuzu juice, or honey can be added for a sweeter citrus flavor.
  • Frozen black cod works well when fully thawed and patted dry.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
  • Serve with steamed rice, sautéed greens, noodles, or roasted vegetables.
