Broccoli Walnut Pesto Pasta is a wholesome, flavorful meal featuring tender broccoli, toasted walnuts, fresh basil, and Parmesan blended into a creamy pesto and tossed with perfectly cooked pasta. It’s a quick, comforting dish that’s packed with fresh ingredients and satisfying flavor.

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces pasta of choice
  • 3 cups broccoli florets
  • 1 cup fresh basil leaves
  • 1/2 cup walnuts, toasted
  • 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup reserved pasta water, as needed

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
  2. Cook the broccoli florets for about 3 minutes until tender-crisp, then transfer them to a bowl of ice water to preserve their color.
  3. Cook the pasta in the same pot according to the package directions until al dente, reserving 1/4 cup of the pasta water before draining.
  4. Add the broccoli, basil, toasted walnuts, Parmesan cheese, garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, salt, and black pepper to a food processor.
  5. Blend until smooth, adding a little reserved pasta water if needed for a thinner consistency.
  6. Toss the cooked pasta with the broccoli walnut pesto until evenly coated.
  7. Add more reserved pasta water as needed to create a silky sauce.
  8. Serve immediately with extra Parmesan cheese and chopped toasted walnuts if desired.

Notes

  • Add grilled chicken, shrimp, or salmon for extra protein.
  • Substitute pine nuts, almonds, or pecans for the walnuts.
  • Blend baby spinach or arugula into the pesto for additional greens.
  • Add roasted cherry tomatoes for a burst of sweetness.
  • Use whole wheat or gluten-free pasta if preferred.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Freeze extra pesto for up to 3 months and reheat pasta gently with a splash of water or olive oil.
