A creamy broccoli and mushroom casserole baked with a rich cheese sauce and topped with a golden, crispy breadcrumb layer. A comforting and flavorful dish perfect as a side or light main.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups broccoli florets
  • 2 cups mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Steam or blanch broccoli until just tender, then set aside.
  3. In a skillet, heat butter or olive oil over medium heat.
  4. Add onion and garlic, cooking until softened.
  5. Add mushrooms and cook until tender and moisture evaporates.
  6. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute.
  7. Gradually add milk, stirring until a smooth sauce forms.
  8. Add cheddar cheese and stir until melted and creamy.
  9. Season with salt and black pepper.
  10. Combine broccoli with the mushroom sauce and mix well.
  11. Transfer to a greased baking dish and sprinkle breadcrumbs on top.
  12. Bake for 20–25 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  13. Cool slightly before serving.

  • Use frozen broccoli if needed, but thaw and drain well.
  • Add cooked chicken for a heartier meal.
  • Substitute cheeses like mozzarella or parmesan.
  • Use crushed crackers instead of breadcrumbs for topping.
