Bread and Butter Pickles are a classic sweet-and-tangy pickle made with fresh cucumbers, onions, vinegar, sugar, and warm spices. Their crisp texture and balanced flavor make them perfect for sandwiches, burgers, salads, and charcuterie boards.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds pickling cucumbers, thinly sliced
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup kosher salt
  • 2 cups ice cubes
  • 2 cups white vinegar
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon celery seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric

Instructions

  1. Combine the sliced cucumbers and onions in a large bowl.
  2. Sprinkle with salt and toss to coat.
  3. Add ice cubes and let stand for 2 hours.
  4. Drain and rinse thoroughly.
  5. In a saucepan, combine vinegar, sugar, mustard seeds, celery seeds, and turmeric.
  6. Bring to a gentle boil, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
  7. Add cucumbers and onions and simmer for 5 minutes.
  8. Pack into sterilized jars and cover with the hot brine.
  9. Cool, seal, and refrigerate for at least 24 hours before serving.

Notes

  • For extra heat, add red pepper flakes or sliced jalapeños.
  • Apple cider vinegar can be substituted for a fruitier flavor.
  • Store refrigerated for up to 2 months.
  • Allow 3 to 5 days for the best flavor development.
