  • Powdered sugar
  • Heavy cream or milk
  • Vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • Chocolate curls (optional garnish)
  • Chocolate chips (optional garnish)
  • Fresh berries (optional garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease and line two 9-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  4. Add the eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract. Mix until well combined.
  5. Slowly stir in the hot coffee or hot water. The batter will be thin.
  6. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
  7. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.
  9. For the frosting, beat the butter until smooth and creamy.
  10. Add the cocoa powder and mix until fully incorporated.
  11. Gradually add the powdered sugar, alternating with cream or milk, until the frosting reaches a spreadable consistency.
  12. Mix in the vanilla extract.
  13. Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of frosting over the top.
  14. Add the second cake layer and frost the top and sides of the cake.
  15. Decorate with chocolate curls, chocolate chips, or fresh berries if desired.

Notes

  • Use hot coffee to enhance the chocolate flavor without adding a strong coffee taste.
  • Add chocolate chips to the batter for extra richness.
  • Fill the cake with chocolate ganache or raspberry preserves for a special variation.
  • The cake layers can be baked ahead and frozen for up to 3 months.
  • Store covered at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for up to 1 week.
  • Allow refrigerated slices to come to room temperature before serving for the best texture.
