Beef Gravy is a rich and savory sauce made with beef drippings, broth, and seasonings simmered until smooth and flavorful. This comforting homemade gravy is perfect for mashed potatoes, roast beef, biscuits, and hearty family meals.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons beef drippings or butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional: fresh thyme
  • Optional: mushrooms
  • Optional: heavy cream
  • Optional: caramelized onions

Instructions

  1. Heat the beef drippings or butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add the flour and whisk continuously for 1 to 2 minutes to form a smooth roux.
  3. Slowly pour in the beef broth while whisking constantly to prevent lumps.
  4. Add Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
  5. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
  6. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring frequently, until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency.
  7. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  8. Serve warm over mashed potatoes, meat, biscuits, or fries.

Notes

  • Add sautéed mushrooms for a flavorful mushroom beef gravy variation.
  • Fresh thyme or rosemary adds extra depth of flavor.
  • For a richer gravy, stir in a splash of heavy cream before serving.
  • If the gravy becomes too thick after refrigeration, thin it with a little extra broth while reheating.
  • Store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 2 months.
