Beef Bolognese Sloppy Joes combine the rich, savory flavors of classic Bolognese with the fun of a hearty handheld sandwich. Tender ground beef, aromatic vegetables, and a tomato-based sauce are piled onto toasted buns for a comforting family meal.

Ingredients

  • Ground beef
  • Olive oil
  • Yellow onion, finely diced
  • Carrot, finely diced
  • Celery, finely diced
  • Garlic, minced
  • Tomato paste
  • Crushed tomatoes
  • Beef broth
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Italian seasoning
  • Dried oregano
  • Dried basil
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
  • Brioche buns or hamburger buns
  • Butter, for toasting buns
  • Fresh parsley or basil, chopped, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the onion, carrot, and celery and cook for 5–7 minutes until softened.
  3. Stir in the garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it into small pieces. Drain excess fat if needed.
  5. Stir in the tomato paste and cook for 1–2 minutes.
  6. Add the crushed tomatoes, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, oregano, basil, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes if using.
  7. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens.
  8. Stir in the Parmesan cheese if using.
  9. Lightly butter and toast the buns until golden.
  10. Spoon the beef mixture onto the bottom halves of the buns, garnish with parsley or basil if desired, and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Toast the buns to help prevent them from becoming soggy.
  • The filling tastes even better the next day, making it ideal for meal prep.
  • Add mozzarella, provolone, or cheddar for a cheesy variation.
  • Substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
  • Store the filling separately from the buns in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Freeze the cooled filling for up to 3 months and thaw overnight before reheating.
