Bechamel Sauce is a classic creamy white sauce made from butter, flour, and milk cooked into a smooth and velvety texture. This versatile French mother sauce is perfect for pasta dishes, casseroles, lasagna, and gratins.

Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Pinch of nutmeg
  • Optional: grated Parmesan cheese
  • Optional: garlic powder
  • Optional: fresh herbs
  • Optional: cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add the flour and whisk continuously for 1 to 2 minutes to create a smooth roux.
  3. Slowly pour in the milk while whisking constantly to prevent lumps.
  4. Continue whisking as the sauce begins to thicken.
  5. Cook for about 5 to 7 minutes until the sauce becomes smooth and creamy.
  6. Season with salt, black pepper, and nutmeg.
  7. Remove from heat once the desired thickness is reached.
  8. Use immediately in your favorite recipes.

Notes

  • Add shredded cheese to transform the sauce into a creamy cheese sauce.
  • Garlic powder and fresh herbs add extra flavor depth.
  • For a richer texture, substitute part of the milk with cream.
  • Cover the surface directly with plastic wrap while cooling to prevent a skin from forming.
  • Store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days and reheat gently while whisking.
