Baked Hamburger Steaks are hearty seasoned beef patties baked with a rich onion and mushroom gravy for an easy homestyle dinner. They pair especially well with mashed potatoes, rice, egg noodles, or vegetables.

Ingredients

  • Ground beef
  • Breadcrumbs
  • Egg
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Yellow onion
  • Sliced mushrooms
  • Beef broth
  • Unsalted butter
  • All-purpose flour
  • Dried thyme
  • Fresh parsley, optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a baking dish.
  2. Combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper in a large bowl. Mix just until combined without overworking the meat.
  3. Divide the beef mixture into equal portions and shape each portion into a thick oval patty.
  4. Arrange the hamburger steaks in the prepared baking dish, leaving a little space between each patty.
  5. Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and mushrooms and cook until softened and lightly browned.
  6. Sprinkle the flour over the vegetables and stir for about 1 minute. Gradually pour in the beef broth while stirring until the gravy is smooth.
  7. Add the dried thyme and a little black pepper, then simmer briefly until the gravy begins to thicken.
  8. Pour the onion and mushroom gravy around and over the hamburger steaks.
  9. Bake for about 25 to 30 minutes, or until the hamburger steaks are fully cooked and reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C) in the thickest part.
  10. Let the hamburger steaks rest briefly before serving with the warm onion and mushroom gravy spooned over the top. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

Notes

  • Avoid overmixing the beef mixture to help keep the hamburger steaks tender.
  • For hamburger steaks without mushrooms, omit them and use additional sliced onion.
  • For cheesy hamburger steaks, add shredded cheddar or another melting cheese during the final few minutes of baking.
  • Minced garlic, additional thyme, parsley, or Italian seasoning can be added for extra herb flavor.
  • For a stronger onion flavor, use additional sliced onions and cook them until soft and golden before making the gravy.
  • Ground turkey can replace the beef, but turkey patties should be cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
  • The patties can be shaped ahead of time and kept covered in the refrigerator until ready to bake.
  • Store cooled hamburger steaks and gravy in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days.
  • Reheat gently with the gravy, adding a splash of beef broth if the gravy becomes too thick.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, egg noodles, green beans, roasted vegetables, or a simple salad.
