Homemade Baked Beans are a classic comfort food featuring tender beans baked in a rich, sweet, and smoky sauce with crispy bacon. Perfect for barbecues, potlucks, holidays, and family dinners, this hearty side dish is full of deep, satisfying flavor.

Ingredients

  • Navy beans or great northern beans, cooked (or canned, drained and rinsed)
  • Bacon, chopped
  • Yellow onion, diced
  • Garlic, minced
  • Ketchup
  • Barbecue sauce
  • Brown sugar
  • Molasses
  • Dijon mustard
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Smoked paprika
  • Black pepper
  • Salt
  • Water or chicken broth (if needed)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F (165°C).
  2. Cook the chopped bacon in a large oven-safe Dutch oven or skillet over medium heat until crisp.
  3. Remove most of the bacon grease, leaving about 1 tablespoon in the pan.
  4. Add the diced onion and cook for 5 minutes until softened.
  5. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  6. Add the ketchup, barbecue sauce, brown sugar, molasses, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, smoked paprika, black pepper, and salt. Stir until well combined.
  7. Fold in the cooked beans and stir gently to coat them evenly in the sauce.
  8. Add a splash of water or chicken broth if the mixture seems too thick.
  9. Cover and bake for 1 hour.
  10. Remove the lid and bake for an additional 20–30 minutes until the sauce is thick and bubbling.
  11. Let the baked beans rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Canned beans are a convenient shortcut for this recipe.
  • For a vegetarian version, omit the bacon and increase the smoked paprika.
  • Add jalapeños or hot sauce for a spicier variation.
  • The flavor improves after resting overnight, making this a great make-ahead dish.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  • Freeze cooled baked beans for up to 3 months.
