Au Gratin Potato Stacks are elegant individual potato layers baked with cream, garlic, and cheese until golden and crispy on the edges with tender, creamy centers. Perfect for holidays, dinner parties, or comforting family meals, these cheesy potato stacks are both impressive and delicious.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère or cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme or rosemary
  • Cooking spray or additional butter for greasing

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a muffin tin thoroughly.
  2. Thinly slice the potatoes using a sharp knife or mandoline.
  3. In a bowl, combine the heavy cream, minced garlic, salt, black pepper, and chopped herbs.
  4. Toss the potato slices with the cream mixture.
  5. Layer the potatoes into the muffin cups, adding cheese between some of the layers.
  6. Fill each muffin cup nearly to the top, as the potatoes will shrink while baking.
  7. Drizzle any remaining cream mixture evenly over the stacks.
  8. Top with extra Parmesan cheese.
  9. Cover loosely with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  10. Remove the foil and continue baking for 20–25 minutes until golden brown and tender.
  11. Let the potato stacks cool slightly before carefully removing them from the pan.
  12. Serve warm with additional herbs if desired.

Notes

  • Yukon Gold potatoes provide a creamy texture while Russet potatoes crisp beautifully.
  • Add crispy bacon or caramelized onions between the layers for extra flavor.
  • Smoked gouda or sharp cheddar can be used for a richer cheese variation.
  • Allow the stacks to cool slightly before removing them to help them hold their shape.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Reheat in the oven or air fryer to maintain crispy edges.
