Amish Sugar Cookies are soft, buttery drop cookies with a tender melt-in-your-mouth texture and classic homemade flavor. Easy to prepare with simple pantry ingredients, they’re perfect for holidays, cookie trays, and everyday treats.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter, vegetable oil, granulated sugar, and powdered sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time.
  5. Add the vanilla extract and mix well.
  6. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt.
  7. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  8. Scoop tablespoon-sized portions of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  9. Lightly flatten each mound of dough with the bottom of a glass if desired.
  10. Bake for 8–10 minutes, or until the edges are just beginning to turn golden.
  11. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes.
  12. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Do not overbake to maintain the cookies’ soft and tender texture.
  • Chill the dough for 30 minutes if excessive spreading occurs.
  • Add sprinkles, cinnamon sugar, or frosting for festive variations.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
  • Freeze baked cookies or unbaked dough for up to 3 months.
  • The combination of granulated and powdered sugar helps create the signature texture.
