This Air Fryer Sauerkraut is warm, lightly caramelized, and full of savory flavor with a mellow tang. It’s a quick and easy side dish that pairs perfectly with sausages, pork chops, sandwiches, and roasted vegetables.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sauerkraut, drained
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or melted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon caraway seeds (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
  • Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Drain the sauerkraut well and gently squeeze out any excess liquid.
  2. Place the sauerkraut in a mixing bowl and toss with the olive oil or melted butter.
  3. Add the garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, caraway seeds, and smoked paprika if using, then mix well.
  4. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  5. Spread the seasoned sauerkraut into an even layer in an air fryer-safe pan or on perforated parchment paper designed for air fryers.
  6. Air fry for 10–12 minutes, stirring halfway through, until the sauerkraut is heated through and lightly browned around the edges.
  7. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired and serve warm.

Notes

  • Drain the sauerkraut thoroughly to help it brown instead of steam.
  • Use an air fryer-safe pan or perforated parchment paper to prevent loose strands from blowing around.
  • Add sliced onions, diced apples, cooked bacon, or sliced kielbasa for a heartier dish.
  • Stir in a drizzle of maple syrup or a pinch of brown sugar for a sweeter flavor, or add red pepper flakes for heat.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 2 months.
  • Reheat in a 350°F (175°C) air fryer for 3–5 minutes or gently warm on the stovetop.
