Air Fryer Mac and Cheese Balls are crispy, golden bites with a creamy, cheesy center that make the perfect appetizer or snack. They’re a delicious way to transform leftover macaroni and cheese into a crowd-pleasing treat with minimal oil.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups cold macaroni and cheese
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • Cooking spray
  • Optional dipping sauces: marinara sauce, ranch dressing, spicy aioli, Buffalo sauce, or honey mustard

Instructions

  1. Refrigerate the macaroni and cheese until completely cold and firm.
  2. Mix in the shredded cheddar and Parmesan cheese if desired for an extra cheesy filling.
  3. Scoop the macaroni and cheese into evenly sized portions and roll into balls.
  4. Freeze the balls for 20 to 30 minutes to help them hold their shape.
  5. Prepare three shallow bowls: one with flour, one with beaten eggs, and one with panko breadcrumbs mixed with garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper.
  6. Coat each ball in flour, dip into the beaten eggs, and roll in the seasoned panko until evenly coated.
  7. Lightly spray the coated balls with cooking spray.
  8. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  9. Arrange the mac and cheese balls in a single layer in the air fryer basket, leaving space between each one.
  10. Air fry for 8 to 10 minutes, turning halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.
  11. Cool for 2 to 3 minutes before serving with your favorite dipping sauces.

Notes

  • Use well-chilled macaroni and cheese for easier shaping.
  • Freeze the balls before breading if they become too soft to handle.
  • Add cooked bacon, diced jalapeños, or fresh herbs for extra flavor.
  • Use gluten-free flour and breadcrumbs for a gluten-free version.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 2 months.
  • Reheat in the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 3 to 5 minutes to restore crispiness.
