Air Fryer Fried Green Tomatoes are a healthier twist on the classic Southern favorite, featuring tangy green tomatoes coated in a crispy, golden crust with very little oil. They’re perfect as an appetizer, snack, or flavorful side dish.

Ingredients

  • 3 firm green tomatoes, sliced into 1/4-inch rounds
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • Cooking spray or olive oil spray
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Wash the green tomatoes and slice them into even rounds.
  2. Prepare three shallow bowls: one with the flour, one with the eggs and buttermilk whisked together, and one with the cornmeal, panko breadcrumbs, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper.
  3. Coat each tomato slice in the flour, dip it into the egg mixture, and press it into the cornmeal mixture until evenly coated.
  4. Lightly spray both sides of each coated tomato slice with cooking spray.
  5. Arrange the tomato slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket, leaving space between each slice.
  6. Air fry at 400°F (200°C) for about 15 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.
  7. Continue cooking until both sides are evenly crisp and the tomatoes are tender.
  8. Transfer the fried green tomatoes to a serving platter.
  9. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Add grated Parmesan cheese to the breading for extra savory flavor.
  • Mix cayenne pepper or Cajun seasoning into the coating for a spicy version.
  • Serve with remoulade, ranch dressing, spicy aioli, comeback sauce, or pimento cheese.
  • Use gluten-free flour and breadcrumbs for a gluten-free variation.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat in the air fryer for a few minutes to restore crispiness.
  • Bread the tomato slices ahead of time and refrigerate until ready to cook.
