Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup fresh Thai basil or regular basil leaves
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon chili flakes or 1 fresh chili, minced
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 8 to 10 lettuce leaves or soft wraps
  • 1 cup shredded carrots
  • 1 cucumber, sliced
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons crushed peanuts, optional
  • Extra lime wedges, optional
  • Fresh herbs, optional

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds, until fragrant.
  3. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until browned and fully cooked.
  4. Stir in the soy sauce, fish sauce, brown sugar, chili flakes or fresh chili, and lime juice, mixing well to coat the beef.
  5. Add the basil leaves and cook for 1 minute, just until wilted and fragrant.
  6. Remove the skillet from the heat and let the beef mixture cool slightly.
  7. Spoon the beef mixture into lettuce leaves or wraps.
  8. Top with shredded carrots, cucumber slices, and green onions.
  9. Finish with crushed peanuts, extra lime wedges, and fresh herbs if desired, then serve immediately.

Notes

  • Thai basil gives the most authentic flavor, but regular basil also works well.
  • Use lettuce wraps for a lighter meal, or tortillas or flatbreads for a heartier option.
  • Ground chicken, turkey, or tofu can be substituted for the beef.
  • Reduce or omit the chili for a milder version.
  • Add cooked rice or noodles for a more filling meal.
  • Store the beef mixture in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Keep fresh toppings separate and assemble just before serving for the best texture.
  • The cooked beef mixture can be frozen for later use.
