A hearty and nutritious homemade whole grain bread recipe made with whole wheat flour, sweetened naturally, and perfect for sandwiches or toast. Packed with fiber and wholesome ingredients.

Ingredients

  1. 2 cups whole wheat flour
  2. 1 cup all-purpose flour or bread flour
  3. 1 cup warm water (110°F/43°C)
  4. 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  5. 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
  6. 1 teaspoon salt
  7. 2 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter
  8. Optional: 2 tablespoons rolled oats (for topping)
  9. Optional: 2 tablespoons sunflower seeds, flaxseeds, or chia seeds (for mix-in or topping)

Instructions

In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water with honey. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.

  1. Add olive oil, salt, and whole wheat flour. Gradually stir in all-purpose or bread flour until a soft dough forms.
  2. Knead dough on a lightly floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise in a warm place for 1 to 1½ hours until doubled in size.
  4. Punch down the dough and shape into a loaf. Place in a greased loaf pan.
  5. Cover and let rise again for 30–45 minutes until puffy.
  6. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  7. Optional: Brush top with water or egg wash and sprinkle with oats or seeds.
  8. Bake for 30–35 minutes or until the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
  9. Let cool on a wire rack for at least 1 hour before slicing.

Notes

  • For a denser loaf, use all whole wheat flour.
  • Add nuts or dried fruit for extra texture and flavor.
  • Use molasses instead of honey for a deeper flavor profile.
  • To make crust crispier, use a steam method during baking.
