Ingredients
4 medium carrots, peeled and trimmed to bun length
2 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon maple syrup
1 tablespoon olive oil
½ teaspoon liquid smoke (optional but recommended)
½ teaspoon smoked paprika
¼ teaspoon garlic powder
¼ teaspoon onion powder
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
Hot dog buns and desired toppings (mustard, ketchup, onions, relish, sauerkraut, etc.)
Instructions
Peel carrots and trim them to match the length of your hot dog buns. Boil in water for 8–10 minutes until just fork-tender but not mushy. Drain and set aside.
In a shallow dish or zip-top bag, mix soy sauce, vinegar, maple syrup, olive oil, liquid smoke, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper.
Add the boiled carrots to the marinade, ensuring they are fully coated. Marinate for at least 4 hours or overnight in the refrigerator.
Grill or pan-sear the marinated carrots over medium heat for 5–7 minutes, turning occasionally, until lightly charred and heated through.
Place each carrot in a hot dog bun and top with your favorite condiments and toppings. Serve immediately.
Notes
For a gluten-free version, use tamari and gluten-free buns.
Marinating overnight enhances the flavor significantly.
Boil carrots just until fork-tender to avoid mushy texture.
Liquid smoke adds an authentic grilled flavor but can be omitted.
