Ingredients

  • 2 cups black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 3/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/3 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 burger buns
  • 4 lettuce leaves
  • 4 tomato slices
  • 1 avocado, sliced

Instructions

  1. Place the black beans in a large bowl and mash them with a fork or potato masher until mostly mashed with some texture remaining.
  2. Add breadcrumbs, chopped onion, minced garlic, soy sauce, tomato paste, cumin, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, and black pepper.
  3. Mix until the ingredients are well combined and the mixture holds together.
  4. Divide the mixture and form it into four equal burger patties.
  5. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  6. Cook the patties for 4–5 minutes on each side until crisp and heated through.
  7. Toast the burger buns if desired.
  8. Place each cooked patty onto a bun.
  9. Top with lettuce, tomato slices, avocado, or preferred toppings.
  10. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Chilling the patties for 20–30 minutes before cooking can help them hold together better.
  • Finely chopped mushrooms can be added for deeper savory flavor.
  • Grated carrots or zucchini can add moisture and nutrition.
  • Cooked quinoa or brown rice can be mixed in for additional texture.
  • Uncooked or cooked patties can be frozen for up to 2 months with parchment paper between them.
