This classic French Toast recipe features thick slices of bread soaked in a sweet, cinnamon-spiced custard and cooked until golden and crisp on the outside with a soft, custardy center. Perfect for breakfast or brunch.

Ingredients

  • 8 slices thick-cut bread (Brioche, Challah, or Texas Toast)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk or half-and-half
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Butter, for cooking

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, sugar, and salt until well combined.
  2. Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, soaking for 20–30 seconds per side. Let excess drip off.
  3. Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat and melt a bit of butter to coat the surface.
  4. Place the soaked bread on the skillet and cook for 2–3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  5. Serve warm with maple syrup, powdered sugar, fresh fruit, or whipped cream.

Notes

  • Use slightly stale bread for better custard absorption without getting soggy.
  • Adjust spices to your taste—nutmeg, cardamom, or pumpkin spice work great.
  • French toast freezes well—reheat in a toaster or oven for crispy results.
  • Cook over medium heat to avoid burning while ensuring the inside cooks through.
  • Try stuffed versions by adding Nutella, cream cheese, or jam between slices.
