Texas Toast Sloppy Joes are a hearty twist on the classic sandwich, featuring rich, savory ground beef served on thick, buttery slices of golden grilled Texas toast. A satisfying and easy meal perfect for busy weeknights or casual gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (or ground turkey)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 bell pepper, finely chopped (optional)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste or 1/3 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp yellow or Dijon mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 8 slices Texas toast or thick bread
  • 23 tbsp butter or margarine

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and cook, breaking it apart, until browned and no longer pink.
  2. Add chopped onion and bell pepper, and cook for 3–4 minutes until softened.
  3. Stir in minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Add ketchup, tomato paste or sauce, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard. Stir to combine.
  5. Let the mixture simmer for 10–15 minutes until thickened. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. While the filling simmers, butter both sides of each slice of Texas toast.
  7. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and toast the bread on both sides until golden and crisp.
  8. Spoon a generous amount of sloppy joe mixture onto each slice of toast and serve warm.

Notes

  • For less mess, serve open-faced with a fork and knife.
  • Use thick-cut sandwich bread if Texas toast isn’t available.
  • Make the sloppy joe mixture in advance for quicker meals.
  • Top with shredded cheese, pickles, or slaw for added flavor.
  • Use a lean meat to reduce grease in the pan.
