Sweet potatoes are a versatile and nutritious root vegetable that can be roasted, mashed, or baked. Their natural sweetness and creamy texture make them an ideal side dish or even a main course.

Ingredients

  1. 4 medium-sized sweet potatoes
    1 tablespoon olive oil (optional)
    Salt and pepper, to taste
1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional for a sweet twist)
1 tablespoon butter (optional for extra richness)

Instructions

Wash the sweet potatoes thoroughly. You can peel them or leave the skin on for added texture and nutrients. Cut them into cubes or slices for quicker cooking if roasting.

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Toss the sweet potato cubes with olive oil, salt, pepper, and cinnamon (if using). Spread them evenly on a baking sheet and roast for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and tender.
  2. If you prefer mashed sweet potatoes, peel and cube the sweet potatoes, then place them in a pot of boiling water. Cook for 15-20 minutes until fork-tender. Drain and mash with butter, salt, and pepper.
  3. Serve as a side dish or incorporate into a main dish.

Notes

  • For added flavor, toss roasted sweet potatoes with rosemary, thyme, or garlic.
  • For sweet potato fries, cut into thin strips, toss with olive oil, salt, and pepper, then bake at 400°F (200°C) for 20-25 minutes until crispy.
  • For a sweeter twist, mash sweet potatoes with brown sugar and a pinch of nutmeg.
  • Sweet potato casserole can be made by mashing and topping with marshmallows or a pecan crumble before baking.
  • Top roasted sweet potatoes with crumbled feta, cilantro, or a dollop of sour cream for added flavor.
