Southern Pie is a classic custard-style dessert with a buttery crust, silky filling, and warm vanilla flavor. Simple yet indulgent, it’s a beloved Southern tradition perfect for holidays, potlucks, or family gatherings.

Ingredients

  1. 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust (homemade or store-bought)
  2. 3 large eggs
  3. 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  4. 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  5. 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  6. 1 cup whole milk or evaporated milk
  7. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  8. 1/4 teaspoon salt
  9. 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the unbaked pie crust in a 9-inch pie plate and crimp the edges.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs and sugar until well combined and slightly frothy.
  3. Stir in flour and salt, then add melted butter, milk, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.
  4. Pour filling into the prepared crust and smooth the top.
  5. Sprinkle nutmeg on top, if using.
  6. Bake for 45–55 minutes, or until the center is set and the top is golden brown. A knife inserted in the center should come out clean.
  7. Cool at room temperature, then chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours.
  8. Serve chilled or at room temperature with whipped cream, if desired.

Notes

  • Evaporated milk gives a richer, more traditional flavor.
  • The pie will continue to set as it cools, so don’t overbake.
  • Make ahead — it tastes even better the next day.
  • Add bourbon, coconut, or lemon zest for flavor variations.
  • Store in the fridge for up to 4 days or freeze for 2 months.
